What Are Phytonutrients? Plant Chemicals With a Powerful Health Boost

They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away for a reason! Problem is, most Americans don’t get their daily recommended dose of fruits and veggies. After all, it’s hard to fill your plate with all the nutrients you need when you’re on-the-go and rushing from one thing to another with your busy schedule!

That’s why we’ve launched our brand-new 310 Reds Superfood Mix – the latest addition to our line of 310 Juices and Shake Boosters for total health, enhanced vitality, and your healthiest weight.

But the colorful fresh fruits and veggies you’ll find in our 310 Reds Mix offer more than just fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They’re also packed with phytonutrients, plant chemicals that can help promote a healthier lifestyle.

Phyto-what in the world?

What is a phytonutrient? Don’t worry, we’re here to break down the basics of phytonutrients, including all the benefits you’ll find in 310 Reds

What Are Phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients -  also called phytochemicals or antioxidants - are chemicals found in fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, and other plants that help keep them healthy. There are thousands of different phytonutrients and they all play different roles, such as helping protect plants from harsh UV rays or defending against insect attacks. In fact, there are so many of them that research hasn’t caught up with all their potential benefits!

What plants are high in phytonutrients? The key is often in the color. Many phytonutrients give fruits and veggies their vibrant coloring, so foods like tomatoes, pomegranates, or blueberries, for example, are a dead giveaway for a high phytonutrient content. And the darker the pigment of the fruits and veggies, the more of these health-promoting phytonutrients you’ll find.

Health Benefits of Phytonutrients

It’s not just the plants that benefit from phytonutrients! When you add phytonutrients to your diet through colorful fruits and veggies, and other foods like beans and whole grains, they help keep your body healthy and happy thanks to their numerous potential health benefits.

A diet rich in phytonutrients could help support:

  • A healthy heart and cardiovascular system
  • A strong immune system and defenses
  • Protection against disease and imbalance
  • Youthful, revitalized skin
  • Brain and memory health
  • Gut and digestive health
  • Balanced energy levels

These health benefits are largely a result of the potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in phytonutrients. These antioxidants help fight off free radicals that cause inflammation, imbalance, and disease in the body.

While we still need more research into these thousands of phytonutrients and their many potential health benefits, early research is promising. Organizations like the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the National Institute of Health (NIH), and several others agree that there is something special about phytonutrients. They encourage you to eat a variety of fruits and veggies to take advantage of these special chemicals, and the many other nutrients you’ll find in these whole-food ingredients.

Phytonutrients Found in 310 Reds

There are thousands of different types and groups of phytonutrients. And dark-hued fruits and veggies — like the ones found in 310 Reds - including beet root, acai juice, strawberry, cherry, and tomato — are especially rich in them.

The most common groups of phytonutrients you’ll find in 310 Reds include resveratrol, ellagic acid, lignans, carotenoids, and flavonoids, among many others. Each has its own benefits for the brain and body:

Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant you can find in 310 Red ingredients including cranberry juice and blueberry fruit. But it’s mostly popular for its inclusion in grapes and red wine! Studies have shown that this antioxidant may help improve your heart health and slow down any signs of cognitive decline.

Ellagic acid

Ellagic acid, also known as tannin, is a health-boosting phytonutrient found in some ingredients in 310 Reds, including raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate juice, and blackberry. It’s absorbed rapidly in the body and contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that could help reduce blood pressure and encourage a healthy metabolism.

Lignans

Lignans, otherwise known as phytoestrogens, are phytonutrients that simulate the effects of estrogen. Due to this, they have been studied in relation to helping to prevent certain diseases, especially hormone-related ones. Although we need more research in this space to confirm these early findings.

You can find lignans in strawberries, which you’ll find in 310 Reds - along with in kale, broccoli, apricots, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and flaxseeds

Carotenoids

There are over 600 types of carotenoids including alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene. You can find these carotenoids in some ingredients in our 310 Reds, including carrot, orange peel, mango, papaya, and tomato. They give these fruits and veggies their bright yellow, orange, and red coloring.

Thanks to their high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, carotenoids are especially known for helping support better eye health and a strong immune system.

Flavonoids

Like carotenoids, flavonoids are a large group of phytonutrients. They include flavones, anthocyanins, flavanones, isoflavones, flavonols, and flavanols. Given how many flavonoids there are, they're included in a wide variety of fruits and veggies such as carrots, apples, tomatoes, and lemon in 310 Reds. By reducing inflammation in the body, these antioxidant phytonutrients help keep your brain and body healthy, and may even help in the prevention of certain chronic diseases.
