What’s a Digital Food Scale?

This “smart” food scale allows you to easily measure out portions of food while you’re cooking, so you can stay within your calorie goals. It’s an easy alternative to using multiple measuring cups, spoons and more to measure, while streamlining and simplifying the cooking experience.
Before we go into the reasons we highly recommend you invest in a food scale, let’s take a look at what the 310 Digital Food Scale has to offer…

Now let’s look at some of the top reasons to consider getting a food scale today!
6 Reasons You NEED a Food Scale (For Health & Weight Loss)
1) Helps Measure Proper Portions
This is the number one reason that most people invest in a food scale, especially for weight loss purposes. Because, if you’re trying to be mindful about serving sizes of prepared foods, or measure out your own portion sizes while cooking, it’s not always an easy process. But with a food scale, it’s fast, simple and efficient. Let’s take a look at both cases…
Trying to find proper serving sizes of prepared foods:
Though you may think that you’re eating reasonable portions, once you actually measure it out, you may realize that you’re eating far more food than you intended. For instance, a jar of peanut butter may state that the serving size is 2 tablespoons, but when you try to measure that out without a food scale, you may actually be getting way more onto your spoon than you realize. And with something as high-calorie as peanut butter, you may be eating many more calories than you thought. Instead, that same amount of peanut butter is equivalent to 32g – which can easily be figured out on the scale.
Trying to measure correct servings while cooking:
It’s very similar when you’re cooking and trying to figure out proper portions within recipes. For instance, if a recipe for 4 servings of baked fish asks for four 6-ounce halibut filets, you would usually just eye it, right? Or, ignore the weight all together! But, with a food scale, you can easily measure the correct amount of fish or any protein by weight.
2) Helps You Stay Within Calorie Goals
One of the main reasons that you want to measure out proper portion sizes, especially for weight loss purposes, is to help you stay within your allotted calorie goals. If you’re eating bigger portion sizes than you should be, that means your unknowingly eating more calories than you should every day in small spurts, and it all adds up!
As mentioned with the peanut butter, this is especially important when it comes to the correct portions of high-fat, high-calorie foods that may be difficult to otherwise measure like cheese, butter, nuts, and more.
3) Makes Your Meals Better (Especially Baked Goods)
Next, you may be so used to “eyeing” your ingredients in meals and baked goods, that you don’t even realize how much better your recipes can turn out when you have more efficient measurements!
Especially when it comes to baked goods, there’s a big difference between even miniscule amounts of vital ingredients like flour, baking soda, sugar, and more. And measuring ingredients by weight is much more efficient than measuring by the amount, or volume of an ingredient, like you do with measuring cups. For instance, one cup of flour is not the same as one cup of sugar, or one cup of blueberries – they all differ in weight, even while they all can fit into one cup!
People who start using a food scale for their cooking, especially when making baked goods, often discover that they’re finished items taste WAY better, with a better consistency, because they actually used correct portions as measured by weight – not volume.
4) Makes Clean Up WAY Easier
Along with making recipes taste better, and helping to measure calorie-appropriate portion sizes, there’s another even simpler reason why you’ll love having a food scale… it makes clean up MUCH easier!
Whereas you typically use multiple measuring cups, spoons, and bowls for just one meal or recipe, with a food scale you can just use ONE bowl or plate, and greatly reduce the amount of clean up you have afterwards!
5) Makes Meal Prep Easier
Next, because you can actually measure out your ingredients in the same containers you plan to meal prep in, you can also make the process of meal prepping much more efficient and faster using a food scale as well. Stay tuned until the next section and we’ll show you exactly how to use the scale for meal prep!
6) Saves You Time
It goes without saying that all of the above tips can also save you a ton of time AND help reduce stress in the kitchen – while making the process of preparing food, cooking and meal prepping much more enjoyable. Read on to learn how to use a food scale for all of your kitchen needs!
How to Use a Food Scale 101
Using a food scale, especially the 310 Digital Food Scale is easy! Just follow the steps and pro tips, below to get started…
First: Put your food scale on a flat, steady surface and turn it on.
Next: Choose the unit of measurement that you wish to measure your ingredients by on the scale, based on your specific recipe or the label of the food item.
Finally: Put the bowl, plate, or container on the scale that you wish to use to measure your ingredients, then clear out the scale to “0”. It’s important to remember that before you add any new item or ingredient onto the scale, it always has to read “0” first. In this way, you can easily keep track of the weight of each new ingredient, instead of the item it’s sitting in and the previous ingredients you already added.
Pro Tip (for Meal Prepping): If you plan on preparing containers full of food that you can grab-and-go for easy meals, having a digital food scale is one of the easiest ways to do this. Start by putting the container you wish to store the food in on the scale and then clearing out the scale to 0, so that it no longer counts the container as part of the weight. Then, add the first food item you want to measure. Add or reduce the amount of that item until you hit the portion size you want to reach.
Next, zero out the scale before adding the next ingredient into the container. Continue to do this until you’ve added all the food into the container, which you can then store away until needed.
Note that you can also do this for measuring out snacks, either right when you want to eat them or in advance for snack prepping. Some great things to use the scale for include nuts, dried fruit, whole grain bread or crackers, pasta, fruits and veggies, and more!
